Millets
Millets are a group of small-seeded grasses. Millets are one of the oldest foods known to humans and possibly the first cereal grain to be used for domestic purposes. In most places, they are being used to feed birds. They can be easily branded as super-foods.
Though they were widely used in earlier days, with Rice and wheat gaining popularity, they had taken a back seat for a while. Now, they have again come to be known, and people have started using them regularly. There are nine main types of millets of which five, which have high fiber, are considered as ‘Siridhanyas.’
Millets are gluten free and have high fiber. Their Glycemic Index is low except for Finger millet. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. Different millets have their own nutritional values and hence suggested that all the varieties are consumed on the rotation basis. It has been established that consumption of millets on regular basis will control the blood glucose and reduce the cholesterol levels. They are also good for those who have constipation.
